I have a 10.12.2 tosh working great except for a few minor annoyances. One is that the DVD drive doesn't seem to be able to mount or read either data DVDs or audio CDs. The DVD model is mentioned in the subject.
I'm sure the drive is working - it shows up in BIOS, and when Sierra boots, I see a little eject icon in the menu bar. Clicking on that shows the drive model. In System Report, under Disc Burning, it shows:

Interconnect: ATAPI
