External USB Disk ~ Repair permission problem

First I'd like to thank the creators and members of this community for the years of helpful content and resources. I have been satisfied with the performance of my humble hackintosh.

Now on to the problem at hand,

I have a WD 1tb usb storage disk for some movies and photos. Recently the permissions on the drive changed to read only. Disk utility fails on verify and repair. My intent is to change the permissions while keeping the data intact if this is possible.
